How to install an eSIM is easiest when you do the preparation at home, not while looking for a network after landing. The download normally takes only a few minutes, but the correct data-line and roaming choices deserve another minute of attention.
Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, connect to Wi‑Fi, then open Add eSIM in Cellular, Mobile Service, Network or SIM manager settings. Scan the provider QR code, use its app or enter the supplied manual details. Label the plan, select it for mobile data and follow the provider's roaming instruction.
Before you install: five checks
These checks prevent most failed installations and unexpected roaming bills. They also help you decide whether to install now or wait until the destination.
- eSIM compatibility: look for Add eSIM, an EID or a SIM manager. Confirm the exact model and regional version because two phones with similar names can have different support.
- Carrier unlock: a locked phone may reject a travel plan from another network. On iPhone, check Carrier Lock in Settings → General → About. On Android, ask the original carrier if the status is unclear.
- Wi‑Fi and power: the phone must reach the provider's server to download a profile. Use a trusted connection and keep the phone charged.
- Activation timing: read when validity starts. Some plans start on installation, while others wait for first connection in a covered country.
- Provider details: keep the QR code, app or activation email ready, preferably on another screen. Treat the code like a private account detail.
Installation versus activation
Installing means downloading an eSIM profile to the phone. Activation can mean the provider authorizes that profile, or it can mean the first time it connects to a supported network. Providers use the words differently, so do not assume that a completed installation has already consumed every day of the plan.
The safest default is to install over Wi‑Fi before travelling, then keep the travel line off or leave it unused until the provider's policy says service should begin. If validity starts at installation, wait until the day you need it. This distinction is why our device-specific guides separate activating eSIM on iPhone and activating eSIM on Android from this universal install route.
How to install an eSIM on iPhone
On a compatible, unlocked iPhone, open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service → Add eSIM. Choose Use QR Code and scan the provider code from a laptop or second phone. If the provider has an app, follow that installation flow instead.
Open the cellular menu
Use Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service → Add eSIM. Older iOS versions may call it Add Cellular Plan.
Scan or transfer the plan
Choose Use QR Code, or use a provider app. iPhone-to-iPhone transfer is a separate carrier feature and does not apply to every travel plan.
Label and assign the line
Call it Travel or the destination, then choose the travel line for Cellular Data when iOS asks.

How to install an eSIM on Android
Android menus vary, but Pixel commonly uses Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Samsung Galaxy commonly uses Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Other phones may put the option under Mobile Network; search Settings for eSIM or Add SIM when the route differs.
Connect to Wi‑Fi
Do this before opening the scanner. The profile cannot use its own mobile data until it is installed and connected.
Add the plan
Open Add eSIM or the closest equivalent, then scan the QR code or follow the provider app.
Choose the data SIM
Label the travel line and select it under Mobile data or Preferred SIMs. Keep automatic switching off while you verify the setup.

QR code and manual installation
A QR code is simply a compact way to deliver the eSIM's server and activation information. Display it on another device, increase brightness and keep the entire square visible. If the camera says the code is invalid, verify that the email belongs to the plan you bought and that the code has not already been used.
No QR code does not always mean no installation. A provider may offer an app or a manual-entry screen. The manual fields often include an SM-DP+ address and activation code; copy values exactly as supplied. Do not use details from a different guide, and do not publish the code because some providers allow only one installation.
Choose the travel eSIM for data
After the profile appears, the phone may still keep your original SIM as its data line. Set the travel eSIM deliberately:
- Travel line: turn it on and select it under Cellular Data on iPhone or Mobile data on Android.
- Home line: keep it for calls and SMS only if needed. Turn its mobile data or roaming off when your home carrier charges for international use.
- Data switching: turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching on iPhone or automatic data switching on Android until you know which line is being used.
- Roaming: apply the provider's instruction to the travel eSIM. A travel plan may require roaming on even though roaming should stay off on the home line.
When you arrive, wait for the plan to register, then toggle Airplane Mode once. Check the selected line before opening maps or streaming. If the provider specifies an APN or network, use only its current value.
Common installation problems
The Add eSIM option is missing: check the exact model, regional variant, software version and carrier lock. Do not assume that every phone in a series has the same eSIM hardware.
The QR code will not scan: use a second screen, increase brightness, clean the camera lens and hold the phone steady. Ask the provider about a replacement before deleting a partly installed profile.
The plan is installed but there is no service: turn on the travel line, select it for data, verify coverage and follow the provider's roaming rule. Our eSIM not working guide covers no service, data and network checks.
The phone uses the home SIM: recheck the data selector and disable automatic switching. A successful web page does not prove that the travel line supplied the connection.
eSIM installation FAQ
Can I install an eSIM before my trip?
Usually, yes. Install over home Wi‑Fi while the provider email is easy to find, but check whether the plan starts on installation or only after it connects in the destination.
What is the difference between installing and activating an eSIM?
Installation downloads the eSIM profile to the phone. Activation or first use may happen when the line connects to a supported network, depending on the provider's policy.
What if the QR code is on the same phone?
Display the QR code on a computer or second phone, use the provider app, or enter manual activation details if supplied. A phone cannot scan its own screen.
Should I remove my physical SIM?
Usually not. A compatible phone can often keep the physical SIM for calls or SMS and use the travel eSIM for mobile data, subject to the phone and carrier's dual-SIM behavior.
Why is my eSIM installed but not showing data?
Turn on the travel line, select it for mobile data, check destination coverage and apply the provider's roaming instruction. Toggle Airplane Mode once before trying more advanced fixes.
Can I reuse the same eSIM QR code?
Often not. Many providers treat a QR code as one-time installation information. Contact the provider before deleting a partly installed profile or trying the code repeatedly.
