How to check eSIM data usage

Find the usage counter on your phone, then check your provider's account for the package balance that actually matters.

To check eSIM data usage, start in your phone's mobile-data settings and confirm which SIM is selected for data. Then open the eSIM provider's app or account to check the remaining package allowance. These two numbers can differ: the phone tracks traffic on the device, while the provider applies its own plan rules and billing period.

Quick answer

On iPhone, open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service) and review cellular-data statistics for the selected line. On a Pixel, try Settings → Network & internet → Internet → carrier settings → App data usage. On Samsung Galaxy, try Settings → Connections → Data usage → Mobile data usage. For the exact data left in a travel plan, check the provider's app or account.

Phone counter or plan balance: which one do you need?

A phone counter answers, “How much mobile data did this device use during the period shown?” It can help identify an app that is using a lot of traffic and estimate your trip pace. It may not align with the plan's renewal date, and it may not be the provider's final usage total.

The provider's app or account answers, “How much of this package or credit remains under the provider's terms?” Use that balance when deciding whether to top up or buy another plan. If the numbers disagree, first check that the travel eSIM is the selected data line and that both screens cover the same dates. For plan limits and billing, the provider is the useful source of truth; Google and Apple also direct users to their network provider for the most accurate current-period figure.

How to check eSIM data usage on iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Mobile Service. The label depends on region and software version.
  2. If the iPhone has multiple lines, review Cellular Data to see which line is selected for internet access.
  3. Scroll through the cellular-data section to see usage by app and, where available, system services. If needed, expand the app list.
  4. Scroll to the bottom to find the statistics reset control. If you want a trip-only counter, note the current total first and reset it when the trip starts.
  5. Open the provider's app or account to compare the used amount or remaining allowance with the selected eSIM plan.

Apple says the iPhone can show app statistics for the current period and for roaming, and that Dual SIM usage is associated with the selected mobile-data number. The “current period” can span a different date range from your travel package unless you reset the phone's counter yourself. Resetting statistics changes the local counter; it does not reset or add data to your plan.

If you want a clean count, reset just before using the travel line and write down the date. Do not rely on that reset as a plan-management action: it only gives you a fresh device reading.

How to check eSIM data usage on Android

Android settings vary by manufacturer, carrier and version. If one path does not match your screen, search Settings for data usage, app data usage or SIMs.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet.
  2. Tap the settings icon beside the carrier or line you want to inspect.
  3. Tap App data usage to see the graph, time period and app-by-app details.
  4. If you use more than one SIM, confirm that the travel eSIM is assigned for mobile data under Network & internet → SIMs.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Data usage.
  2. Tap Mobile data usage for the phone's mobile-data total and app breakdown.
  3. Review Billing cycle and data warning if you want the phone's tracking dates to resemble your package period.
  4. Check the SIM manager or mobile-data selector to verify the travel eSIM is the active data line. Whether a device separates usage by line depends on its software.

Other Android phones may group the same controls under Network & internet, Mobile network or SIM manager. Google's Pixel instructions note that a custom Android version may use different steps and that some operators count usage differently from the phone. Samsung likewise notes that menu options may vary by carrier.

Check remaining data in your provider's app

For the remaining allowance, look for labels such as Data, Usage, My plans, Balance or Active package. Some providers show data used, some show data left, and pay-as-you-go products may show a credit balance that converts to an estimated amount of data at the current destination rate. Read the label and the plan's validity details before comparing numbers.

For example, Roamless's current support instructions say its Home screen shows FLEX credit and destination-adjusted data allowance, while active FIX plans and rewards appear as separate cards with remaining data. Its Data tab provides usage breakdowns and trip summaries. Those are Roamless-specific app labels, so another provider may organize the same information differently.

Keep a reliable data count while travelling

  • Check the selected line first. A phone can keep a home SIM and travel eSIM installed, but only the selected data line normally carries mobile internet.
  • Match the dates. Phone counters may reset monthly or only when you reset them; compare like-for-like dates with the package validity window.
  • Look at app-level use. Photo backups, video, maps and hotspot tethering can use more data than messaging. Restrict background data or large uploads on the travel line if your plan is limited.
  • Use the provider's balance for top-ups. A phone warning is a local estimate and may not trigger at the provider's exact threshold.
  • Keep Wi-Fi and mobile data separate. The phone's Wi-Fi usage graph is not mobile usage; check the cellular or mobile-data section for the travel line.

eSIM data usage FAQ

How do I check eSIM data usage on iPhone?

Open Settings, tap Cellular or Mobile Service, and review the data statistics for the selected mobile-data number. The screen can show usage by app; reset statistics at the start of a trip if you want a fresh device counter.

How do I check eSIM data usage on Android?

On Pixel, open Settings, tap Network & internet, Internet, the settings icon beside the carrier, then App data usage. On Samsung Galaxy, try Settings, Connections, Data usage, then Mobile data usage. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Does my phone show how much eSIM data is left?

Usually the phone shows data used on the device, not the provider's exact remaining allowance. Check the eSIM provider's app, account page or support channel for the package balance and billing measurement.

Why is my phone's data usage different from my eSIM provider's total?

The phone and provider may use different measurement periods or counting methods, and the phone may be tracking another SIM. Confirm the selected data line and date range, then use the provider's account for the plan's official balance.

Can I check eSIM data usage for each app?

Yes. iPhone lists cellular usage by app, while Pixel and Samsung phones provide app-usage details in their mobile-data settings. These are device estimates for the displayed period, not a replacement for the provider's plan counter.
