How to check if your phone is unlocked

Confirm that the phone can use a different network before you install a travel eSIM or land without a backup.

Phone and travel documents arranged for a carrier-lock and eSIM readiness check
Unlock status is a carrier question.

How to check if your phone is unlocked depends on the operating system and the original carrier, but the principle is simple: confirm carrier status for the exact device before installing a travel plan. An unlocked phone can generally use a compatible network from another carrier; a locked phone may refuse it. This is different from eSIM compatibility, so how to check if my phone is unlocked should always be a separate step from looking for an EID or Add eSIM.

Quick answer

On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and find Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked. On Android, there is no single menu path for every manufacturer: check the original carrier account or support channel and ask about the exact device. If needed, test with another compatible SIM only when the plan and QR-code risks are clear.

What “unlocked” means for an eSIM

A carrier lock is a network restriction applied by the original carrier or seller. It is not the same as a screen passcode, an Apple Account lock, a missing SIM tray or a phone that has no signal. A phone may be fully usable at home and still reject a different network abroad.

There are three questions to keep apart:

  • Can the phone store an eSIM? Check hardware and software support, including the exact regional model.
  • Can it use another network? Check Carrier Lock or the original carrier's account and support answer.
  • Can this plan work here? Confirm the travel provider supports the destination, device and activation method.

An EID only helps answer the first question. A carrier's “unlock” answer only helps answer the second. For the complete device readiness check, see how to check eSIM compatibility.

How to check if an iPhone is unlocked

Use the built-in status field before you travel. Open Settings → General → About and scroll to Carrier Lock. On an unlocked iPhone, the status is normally shown as No SIM restrictions. If it shows a restriction, says the status is unavailable or the field is not present, treat the result as unresolved and ask the original carrier.

01

Identify the device

While you are in About, record the model number and IMEI privately. If the phone was bought used or imported, compare those details with the purchase record or carrier account.

02

Read Carrier Lock

Look for “No SIM restrictions”. Do not infer unlock status from the fact that the current SIM works or that the phone has an eSIM menu.

03

Confirm with the carrier if unclear

Ask the original carrier whether this exact device is unlocked for service from another network. Keep the answer before you activate a travel plan.

Apple's wording and menu placement can change with software or language, but the Carrier Lock field is the useful concept. If the phone was recently unlocked, restart it and check again after the carrier confirms the change. Do not erase cellular plans just to refresh the status.

How to check if an Android phone is unlocked

Android does not expose one universal carrier-lock screen. Settings, carrier firmware and country can change the labels. Start with Settings → About phone to record the exact model and IMEI, then search Settings for SIM, network, carrier or unlock. If the phone shows a SIM manager, that can help you inspect active lines, but it is not definitive proof of an unlocked state.

The original carrier is the most reliable source for a carrier-specific answer. Use the carrier's account, device-status page or official support channel. Ask: “Is this exact IMEI or device unlocked for another network and an eSIM?” A simple question about “international use” can produce a different answer, because roaming on the home carrier is not the same as accepting a local or travel carrier.

If the phone was purchased second-hand, contact the seller or original carrier with the device details. A factory reset removes personal data; it does not normally change a network lock. Avoid unofficial unlock tools that request your account credentials or device identifiers.

Can you test with another SIM?

A compatible physical SIM from a different carrier can be a useful practical test, and some providers can offer an eSIM activation check. However, a travel eSIM often uses a QR code or manual activation code that may be limited to one installation. Do not consume a one-time code just to experiment if the provider has not confirmed that the plan can be recovered.

If you do run a test, use a known-good SIM or a provider-approved test, connect to Wi-Fi, and note the exact error. “SIM not supported”, “network locked” or an activation refusal points toward a carrier restriction, while a missing Add eSIM option points toward compatibility. An installed line with no data may instead be a coverage, roaming or data-selection issue.

Testing should support the carrier answer, not replace it. If you need a travel setup after the unlock check, follow our eSIM installation guide and keep the plan's recovery details available.

What to do if the phone is locked

Contact the original carrier and ask for its official unlock process, eligibility rules and expected confirmation. Requirements can depend on the account, device history, payment status or local policy, so do not promise yourself that an unlock will happen instantly. Ask whether the request applies to the exact IMEI and whether you need to complete any additional steps on the phone.

Until the carrier confirms the change, use a backup such as Wi-Fi, a second unlocked phone or a carrier option that you already know is supported. Do not buy or install a travel eSIM as a workaround for a known lock. Do not delete your home eSIM or reset the device; neither action is a substitute for an official carrier unlock.

Once the phone is confirmed unlocked, label the travel line clearly and choose it for mobile data after installation. Our travel eSIM guide explains how to keep a home line available without allowing automatic data switching to choose the wrong plan.

Common confusing results

“No SIM restrictions” but the eSIM fails: unlock status is only one gate. Recheck the exact model, destination, activation method, coverage and provider instructions.

The current SIM works, so the phone must be unlocked: not necessarily. A locked phone can work normally with its original carrier.

There is an EID, so the phone must be unlocked: an EID indicates eSIM capability, not carrier permission. Ask the original carrier.

Android has no clear status: use the original carrier's official account or support answer and provide the exact device details. Avoid relying on a generic model list.

If the plan is already installed and the connection is the problem, use our eSIM troubleshooting guide before removing the profile.

Phone unlock FAQ

How do I check if my phone is unlocked?

On iPhone, open Settings → General → About and look for Carrier Lock; “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked. On Android, check the original carrier account or support channel, then confirm with a compatible alternate SIM or eSIM only when you understand the activation risk.

How do I check if my iPhone is unlocked?

Go to Settings → General → About and find Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions”, the iPhone is unlocked. If the field is missing or shows a restriction, ask the original carrier to confirm the status for that exact device.

Is an unlocked phone automatically eSIM-compatible?

No. Unlock status only describes whether another network can be used. The phone must also have eSIM hardware and software support, and the provider must support the destination and device.

What should I do if my phone is carrier-locked?

Contact the original carrier and ask about its official unlock process and eligibility. Do not assume a factory reset or a new eSIM will remove a network restriction, and do not delete your existing plan as a test.

Can I use a travel eSIM on a locked phone?

A locked phone may reject a travel eSIM from another network. Confirm the lock policy with the original carrier and the travel provider before you install a plan.

Does an EID show that my phone is unlocked?

No. An EID is related to eSIM capability, not carrier unlock status. Check the two conditions separately.

Guide note: Unlock rules belong to the original carrier and can vary by account and region. Treat the carrier's confirmation for your exact device as the final check.
