How to remove an eSIM from iPhone

Delete a profile only when you are sure it is no longer needed — and know how the provider can restore it.

How to remove an eSIM from iPhone is a short settings action, but the decision before it is important. Deleting an eSIM removes its profile from the device. It is not the same as turning a line off, and it may not be reversible with the original QR code. If you only need to stop a travel line for a while, keep the profile and use the reversible option described in how to turn off an eSIM on iPhone.

Quick answer

First identify the exact line and save its provider email, support details and recovery information. Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service, tap the eSIM line, choose Delete eSIM or Delete Cellular Plan and confirm. Remove it only when you no longer need that profile. If the QR code was one-time, reinstalling may require a new code from the provider.

Remove, delete or turn off?

ActionWhat happensBest for
Turn off the lineThe profile stays on the iPhone and can be enabled again.A trip is over temporarily, or you want to stop data while keeping the plan available.
Delete eSIMThe profile is removed from the phone; activation may be needed again. An expired or unwanted plan you are certain you will not need.
Cancel a planA provider-account action, separate from the phone setting.Only when the provider's own process says cancellation is needed.

These actions can be related, but they are not interchangeable. Removing a profile does not reliably cancel the provider account, and cancelling a provider plan does not necessarily remove the profile from the iPhone. Handle each action in the system where it belongs.

Before you delete the eSIM

Take a minute to identify the line. Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service and tap each plan if you are unsure. Check the label, phone number, carrier name, data usage and whether the line is currently the mobile-data line. A label such as “Travel”, “Japan data” or a carrier name can prevent deleting the wrong profile.

  • Confirm the plan is finished: make sure you are not still using its data, number, verification messages or destination coverage.
  • Save recovery details: keep the provider email, account access and support route. Save the QR code only in a private place; do not assume it can be reused.
  • Check other lines: confirm your home line remains present and know which line will carry data after removal.
  • Use Wi-Fi: connect before making changes so you can reach support or download instructions if something goes wrong.
  • Consider transfer: if you are moving the plan to a new iPhone, follow the provider's transfer flow instead of deleting the old profile as a first step.

If the eSIM is only not connecting, removal is usually a poor first troubleshooting step. Read our eSIM not working guide and check the data line, roaming, coverage and network settings first.

How to remove an eSIM from iPhone

The wording can differ slightly between iOS versions and languages, but the setting is normally inside the line's own cellular page.

01

Open Cellular settings

Go to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service. Wait for the list of plans to load, especially if the iPhone has recently restarted or changed networks.

02

Select the exact eSIM

Tap the travel or secondary line you intend to remove. Read the label and carrier details again; do not tap the home line by habit.

03

Choose Delete eSIM

Scroll to the line-management option and choose Delete eSIM, Delete Cellular Plan or equivalent. Read the warning and confirm only if you accept that the profile will leave this iPhone.

If you see a choice to turn the line off and a separate choice to delete it, the first is reversible and the second is the destructive action. If the delete option is missing, do not use a factory reset as a substitute. Ask Apple or the provider which management step applies to that line.

What to check after removal

Return to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service. The deleted line should no longer appear as an active plan. Check that your home line is still on if you need it, and open Cellular Data to confirm the intended remaining line is selected. If you removed the only data line, the iPhone can still use Wi-Fi, but mobile data will wait for another active plan.

Send a small test message or open a lightweight page only after confirming the selected line. A missing eSIM profile and a no-service problem are different states. Do not keep tapping activation links from old emails unless the provider confirms that the code remains valid.

Can a deleted eSIM be installed again?

Sometimes, but the answer belongs to the provider that issued the plan. A QR code may be reusable, may be tied to the original device, or may be limited to one successful installation. Some providers can issue a replacement; others may require an account-based recovery process. The phone's ability to show Add eSIM does not guarantee that the old plan can be restored.

Before deleting a plan that still has time or value, ask the provider three specific questions: Can this profile be installed again? Is the QR code one-time? What should I do if I delete it accidentally? Keep the answer with your travel notes. If you already removed it, connect to Wi-Fi, identify the plan and contact the provider rather than repeatedly scanning the same code.

When installing a replacement, use the provider's current instructions and verify the phone is compatible and unlocked. Our iPhone installation guide covers the setup sequence, while the travel-use guide explains the data-line choices afterward.

When removal makes sense

Expired travel plan: remove it after checking that the plan, number and recovery details are no longer needed. This keeps the line list easier to read before the next trip.

Temporary trip finished: turn the line off instead if there is any chance you will return soon or need the profile again. Deleting it creates an avoidable reinstallation question.

New iPhone: follow the provider's device-transfer route first. Keep the old phone and profile available until the new device is confirmed working.

Wrong profile: stop and identify it before deleting anything. If you removed it already, contact the provider for recovery rather than resetting the phone.

If the eSIM will not remove

Restart the iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi and check the same cellular settings again. If an account restriction, a managed-device policy or an iOS issue hides the option, ask Apple or the carrier for the exact supported route. Avoid deleting other plans to make the menu “reset”.

If the line has disappeared but you still have no data, check Cellular Data and the remaining line. If the wrong line was removed, keep the phone on Wi-Fi while you contact the provider. The most useful details are the line label, the time of removal and any error message — not a repeated series of QR scans.

Removing an iPhone eSIM FAQ

How do I remove an eSIM from iPhone?

Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service, tap the line you want to remove and choose Delete eSIM or Delete Cellular Plan. Read the confirmation carefully and delete it only after saving recovery details and confirming that you no longer need the profile.

Is removing an eSIM the same as turning it off?

No. Turning a line off is reversible and keeps the eSIM profile on the iPhone. Deleting or removing the eSIM profile removes it from the device and may require a new activation or QR code to install it again.

Can I reinstall an eSIM after deleting it?

Sometimes, but it depends on the provider. Some activation QR codes are intended for one installation, so contact the provider before deleting a plan you may need again.

Will deleting an eSIM cancel the plan?

Deleting the profile removes it from the iPhone, but it does not reliably answer what happens to the provider account or plan. Check the provider's terms and support route before removing it.

Should I remove an expired travel eSIM?

If the plan is finished and you need space or a clearer line list, removal can be reasonable. First confirm that you will not need the profile, its number or its activation details again.

What should I do if I removed the wrong eSIM?

Do not keep retrying an old QR code. Identify the removed line, contact its provider and ask whether it can be reissued. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while you follow the provider's recovery steps.

Guide note: Removing a profile is a device action; plan cancellation and reissue are provider actions. Confirm both before deleting an eSIM you may need again.
