How to install an eSIM on iPhone

The clean Settings path, what to do with the QR code, and how to make sure your travel eSIM—not your home line—uses data abroad.

How to install an eSIM on iPhone is a short Settings workflow when the phone is compatible and unlocked. The useful part is knowing what to check before scanning, which line should carry data and when the provider considers the plan active.

Quick answer

Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service → Add eSIM. Scan your provider's QR code from another screen or follow its app. Label the new line Travel, choose it under Cellular Data and follow the provider's instruction about Data Roaming. Keep your normal line only for the calls, texts or number you still need.

Check your iPhone before buying

These checks are more reliable than guessing from the iPhone name alone. Regional versions, carrier policies and managed devices can change what the Settings menu shows.

  • Look for an EID: open Settings → General → About and scroll through the device information. An EID is a good sign that eSIM hardware is present, but confirm the exact model too.
  • Check Carrier Lock: in the same About screen, look for “No SIM restrictions”. If the status is different or missing, ask the original carrier before buying a plan.
  • Use current software: install available iOS updates when practical, then connect to stable Wi‑Fi and charge the phone.
  • Read the provider's timing: validity may start on installation, first network connection or another event. This determines whether to install now or later.
  • Prepare a second screen: keep the QR code or activation email on a laptop or another phone. Keep it private because some codes are single-use.

How to install an eSIM on iPhone step by step

01

Open Add eSIM

Go to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service → Add eSIM. Older iOS versions may show Add Cellular Plan instead.

02

Choose the QR route

Tap Use QR Code, then point the camera at the full code on your second screen. Read the plan name before confirming.

03

Download and label it

Tap Continue or Add Cellular Plan, wait for the profile to download and label it Travel, Europe data or the destination.

04

Answer the line questions

When iPhone asks about default voice, iMessage and mobile data, select the choices that match your trip. For data, choose the travel eSIM.

05

Leave the profile available

Do not delete it after installation just because it has no service at home. A travel plan may wait for a supported network in the destination.

Install with a QR code or without one

The QR code is a delivery method, not the service itself. If it will not scan, show it on a brighter second screen, clean the camera lens and keep the whole square in view. Do not scan a code copied from a public post.

If the provider did not send a QR code, check for an official app or choose Enter Details Manually under Add eSIM. Manual setup may ask for an SM-DP+ address and activation code. Copy the values exactly as supplied by the provider; do not guess them from the plan name, phone number or another guide.

Choose the travel line for data

Installing an eSIM and choosing it as the data line are separate decisions. Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service → Cellular Data and select the travel label. Then review the two lines:

  • Travel eSIM: turn the line on. Enable Data Roaming for that line only if the provider requires it to connect to a partner network.
  • Home line: keep it on for calls or SMS if you need your normal number, but turn its Data Roaming off when your carrier charges for international data.
  • Allow Cellular Data Switching: leave it off while testing. Otherwise iPhone may fall back to another line when the travel signal is weak.

After landing, wait for the travel line to register, then toggle Airplane Mode once. Check the label next to Cellular Data before opening maps. If the provider lists an APN or preferred network, use its current instructions rather than a generic forum post.

When is the installed eSIM activated?

Some providers call the download “activation”; others reserve activation for the first connection in a covered destination. If the plan starts on installation, wait until the provider's recommended time. If it starts on first supported network connection, installing at home over Wi‑Fi is usually convenient and does not use the destination allowance yet.

Common iPhone installation errors

Add eSIM is missing: check the exact model, iOS version and Carrier Lock field. A carrier-locked or organization-managed phone may not accept another provider's plan.

The QR code is invalid or already used: verify the correct email and full code, then ask the provider for help. Deleting a partly installed profile can make recovery harder if the code is one-time.

The plan is installed but shows no bars: turn the travel line on, select it for data, check destination coverage and apply the provider's roaming setting. Then restart or toggle Airplane Mode once. If the problem continues, use our eSIM troubleshooting guide.

The phone uses home data: revisit Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and disable Allow Cellular Data Switching. Confirm the chosen label before testing a webpage.

iPhone eSIM installation FAQ

Is it safe to install an eSIM on iPhone before travel?

Usually, yes. Install over reliable Wi‑Fi before leaving, but check whether the provider starts the plan's validity on installation or only after the eSIM connects in the destination.

How do I install an eSIM on iPhone without a QR code?

Use the provider app if available, or choose the manual entry option under Add eSIM and enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code supplied by the provider.

Can I keep my physical SIM when I install an eSIM on iPhone?

On a compatible iPhone, you can usually keep the physical SIM for your normal number and select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Check your carrier's roaming costs.

Does installing an eSIM activate it immediately?

Not always. Installation downloads the profile, while activation may occur on installation or on first connection in a covered destination, depending on the provider.

Why is Add eSIM missing on my iPhone?

The iPhone may not support eSIM, may be carrier-locked, may be managed by an organization or may need a software update. Check the exact model and carrier status.

What should I do if the eSIM QR code will not scan?

Display the code on a second screen, increase brightness, clean the camera lens and keep the full square visible. Ask the provider for help before deleting a partly installed profile.
